Sourdough Starter

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Our Family® Whole Wheat Flour
  • 6 cups Our Family® All-Purpose Flour

Directions

  1. Day 1: In glass or stainless steel quart-sized container, stir whole wheat flour and 3/4 cup room temperature water until smooth; cover with paper towel and seal with rubber band. Let stand 24 hours.
  2. Day 2: Discard 1/2 the starter (about 1/2 cup); stir in 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup room temperature water. Cover with paper towel and seal with rubber band; let stand 24 hours.
  3. Day 3: Discard 1/2 the starter (about 1/2 cup); stir in 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup room temperature water. Cover with paper towel and seal with rubber band; let stand 12 hours.
  4. Discard 1/2 the starter (about 1/2 cup); stir in 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup room temperature water. Cover with paper towel and seal with rubber band; let stand 12 hours.
  5. Days 4 and 5: Repeat the process of day 3, feeding the starter with 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup room temperature water every 12 hours.
  6. Day 6: The starter should be bubbly and have a tangy aroma. If the starter is not bubbly, continue the process used on day 5 each day until the starter is bubbly.
  7. Store starter dough at room temperature, feeding it every day by discarding 1/2 and stirring in 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup room temperature water. The starter can also be refrigerated, feeding it once a week; bring it to room temperature and feed it every 24 hours if storing at room temperature. Make sure the starter is bubbly before using, or continue the feeding process until it is.
